I feel you pain! I think almost everyone has to go through these hard days. It took me several months to decide on a topic and write a research proposal. As it was said before, first look at what you have done already and other similar areas. Perhaps, there is something that can be explored further. Then just read all the recent articles in that field, and see where you can go from there.
I can say that for me my trainning in Utrecht really helped me making my mind.I already has an idea of what I wanted to do and this experience helped me to decide.I always felt atracted towards clinical research.I am currently doing research on the molecular and genetic characterisation of the hereditarial diseases Xeroderma Pigmentosum,Trichothiodystrophy and Cockaine Sydrome which are all related to DNA Repair.My advice is the same as Alex:read all the recent articles of the subject it attracts you most,see which ones do the most attractive research and go from here!
