Hi lomantic,
no personal experience yet have heared crucial part is the quality of the tape: if the sound is very good it may work, if the quality is poor then it is a not worth the money nor the effort.
I transcribe focus groups myself, takes me about 5 hours for each hour of spoken text.
I cannot say anything about software as I do not know much about them. But yes I can suggest you an online speech to text service - www.speechtotextservice.com. This service is pretty good.
I'm not sure if it's classed as ethical in research if you can't go back to the original tapes but have you thought about rather than recroding then going back to transcribe, using the PC based speech to text transcriber from the outset so as you are interviewing the PC is already transcribing? You could then print off copies of the transcript straight away and depending on what research you are doing your interviewee could even give feedback on the transcript. Just a thought, a colleague used this type of software to tpye his dissertation as he was dyslexic so he just spoke what he wanted the pc to type.
Hello there. I was also looking for the same software but eventually i could not find it. Then i came across this great website called www.speechtotextservice.com
They don't use any kind of software for transcription in fact they have hired very professional transcribers.Great Service. I have been looking around for speech to text software for past three months unless i somehow looked in their website and read about their service. It was really nice doing business with them. I am surprised that they are providing a high quality work with low amount of price. Will definitely look forward to do more business with them. I would suggest you all to at least look at their samples and they also offer free trial so you can check the quality first.
