Well, I started a PhD 8 months ago, the topic was great and all, but now, the people get on my nerves and the supervisor can't stop going from one thread to another one, I am losing direction, really!! In the meantime, I looked for other PhDs and found one in the UK, in UMIST. I heard it is a good institute. The UMIST called me for an interview. If they accept me, should I go? Or not? There is the risk that it will be like here as well...I really don't know what to do...Any suggestions?
If you haven't done so already, I would suggest that you discuss your problems with your supervisor. If you like your topic it would be a shame to have all the upheaval of uprooting to go elsewhere, especially if, as you say it could be like where you are now.
The Department of Instrumentation and Analytical Science at UMIST has a very good reputation. They are rated highly for both research and teaching (RAE=5).
However your current problems seem to be related to your personal relations with your current research group. Your should follow Bicycle Repair Man's advice and talk to your supervisor, your PhD advisors or your departmental postgraduate tutor before making any decisions. If you do decide to go, spend some time visiting UMIST to see if you'll get on with the research team there.
Dear friend,
take your time before you decide. Take the advise of others, Visit the UMIST for some time, talk to other groups, and hope that you do not face the same problem.
I went through the same problem but I was lucky the I talked to my supervisor and explaind my point of view and he was very reactive.
