A few days ago I presented some of my work at a big conference. Although I had some troubles (as you may have read at a previous thread, all of my work was lost for my USB due to a virus...).
Despite the problems, and despite the fact that I made a presentation without a presentation (no ppt), I just received an email by an assistant professor who was excited about my research.
In fact, she is asking me to do some research together, as we are researching similar things and on neighbouring countries.
It won't be that much of a trouble to me, as it won't be that much more work (just some interviews and then paper writing). I think I can find the time to do it. Regarding my PhD I am far ahead of my scheduled timetable, so I can spare a month or two.
Do you think I should go for it?
Thanks for your responses......
Err why wouldn't you go for it - It's a great opportunity and hopefully this has helped you put the stresses over the conference behind you. Having published papers before PhD is completed proves that your work is of publishable quality and working with a more experienced researcher will open more doors for you.
I am reluctant because I don't know if being a PhD student means that I only have to do reserach and publish with my supervisor (or alone) and not with someone from another university...
I really don't know....
I guess I will have to discuss it with my supervisor over our meeting in a couple of hours (the one at which I should tell her that I don't have anything to show, because everything was deleted.....):-(
Oh yes, go for it! I'm writing a paper with the academic who supervised my MSc dissertation, despite having gone to another university to do my PhD. My new supervisors are very happy for me to do that, as long as it doesn't get in the way of my PhD - they say it's great for my future career, and they have no problem with me publishing stuff that they don't have their name on if they're not actually involved in the work. Hopefully your supervisors will see it the same way!
I had my meeting yesterday. My supervisor totally understood the USB disaster, and was really grad that I had everything in double and triple backups!!!!!!!!!!
She was really pelased to hear about that collaboration with the other professor. She even thought that I should try to have my conference presentation published in a really important journal (although it is difficult, I will try it) and that I should stop reading and analysing and start writing!!
So, from Monday, I am officially in the write up stage (which I recon will take me more than a year as I want to take it reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaally slowly)!!!!!!
