I have been offered a Phd in a top ranking University department in the UK. For my studies it is the perfect place in regard to location facilities, faculty, training, etc. However I have been offered a full scholarship to do a PhD in my home country. The University I would have to do it in there is not as well regarded and I fear that my future career prospects may be limited as a result. Also my topic is very specific to the UK. I'm not sure which way to go. Any advice?
can you afford to not have funding? if this is not an issue then go for the top uni. However, just because you do research in a uni not necessarily regarded highly doesn't end the world, if you would enjoy it more (and be under less financial stress) then you should do that.
That's why I'm torn between the two. I will have to fund going to the UK through a very large loan. However, I will be in a much much better position for a future career and in a good position to pay off the loan. On the oter hand if I do it in my home country I will be debt free but not really in the position to channel my career in the the way I want too. That's why I'm confused.
Hi..I was in your situation a year ago..i went with the uni with the not-so-good rankings and don't regret it.Don't be fooled by a uni's name bcz sumtimz it all depends on the supervisor you get....besides, i know ppl who graduated from top unis like U of Toronto but ended up working at a smaller uni...but ppl who went to a asmaller uni got better positions...also u should keep in mind...wherever u are, it is the quality of research that counts.....
