I am an science student moving into social science research!! i am kind of worried whether i will be at disadvantage in pursuing a social science research being a science student from my bachelor's and master's, have any one on the forum have made this transition would love to hear the experience
I have not made this transition, but it is common to see students who do not have first degrees in the social sciences. you will get research training on how to write essays. other than writing style and presentation as well as methods of analysis, which you will be taught, i do not forsee you being disadvantaged in any way. it's a lot more reading than the sciences..but it can be done.
It is only lot easier depending on what your strengths are. if you don't love reading, it can be difficult but it can be done. if you are love reading, it should be easier. the same as sciences i suppose- if you don't enjoy calculations, experiments and being imaginative, it would be difficult but not impossible to do. if you do, it will be a lot easier.
I started as a scientist and am now half-way through a social science PhD. I'm doing sociology of science, and if you're doing similar (soc sci research applied to science) then you'll find LOADS of others who have done this -having a science background is advantageous. I do worry about not having depth of knowledge in sociology - as others have commented, there's a lot of reading, and I need to do even more to 'catch up' with the basics. Also, it has made finding and doing teaching work harder. But overall, definitely enjoying it.
