studentships. phd, diffrence?

G

sorry, i researched on-line but i still cant figure out the diffrence. if i apply for a studentship, do i still have to fill the university forms?

also, i have a 3.00 gpa in chemical engineering from US, and i am a 19 nigerian, would it be possible for me to get a PhD in UK? Thank you

G

yeah, imm, I think you can get the phd in uk. I think you need to fill in the university form. I don't know what degree you've got. if it is master you can apply phd with a research proposal, cv, reference, sorts of things. but if you are an undergrad, you probably need to apply master coures first. and your gpa is fine, but they may not ask for it.

G

Thank you very much!

G

no big deal, love. but sorry, I forgot to tell you that you can have unformal talk with the academic staffs before you send out the formal application material. with their instructions you may find it's easier.

G

You dont need to apply for a masters first. A GPA of about 3.0 is roughly equivalent to a 2:1, i would say, so you should be ok (you might want to get this checked officially). And they WILL ask for it. I would advise you to get in contact with some labs informally first, then take it from there.

G

Sorry, imm! it seems to Steve, gpa is need. I really don't know this. But Steve, are you sure? They did not aske for my gpa at all when I came here for master course.

G

Yeh im pretty sure you will be asked for your GPA at any good uni. For an MSc they may not (but they still should!), but for a PhD i would expect most places to take the GPA very seriously. They take our degree results extremely seriosuly so why would they make exceptions for overseas students????

G

Oh. Thanks Steve. I think I need to be very careful before I give some suggestions to others. but I still haven't been asked for GPA when I am applying. I think maybe because I am a student in arts rather than science. What is your working area then, science? And, sorry, imm, maybe there is difference between arts and chemistry.

G

Thats okay Shari and thanks Steve. I know the schools i have looked at asked for a 2:1 degree or the equivalent, which would be GPA in USA. Thank you.
