Hi everyone,
I submitted my PhD thesis last week in Media and Communications. I received a scholarship, meaning the Australian government/ university paid approximately $200,000 over the last 3.5 years for me and my education. Of course I appreciate that a lot. However, I find it a bit strange that once I finish my studies, I have to leave the country. Shouldn't Australia have an incentive to keep me here in order to benefit from my education? The chances to get PR are not good as academics are not on the skilled occupation list. I can get a temporary graduate VISA, however, employers understandably hesitate to hire people with temporary VISAs.
Are here any (former) international PhD students going or have been going through a similar situation? Any other VISA options or recommendations regarding jobs. Currently I am teaching casually but only as long as my VISA lasts (until examination).
Thanks for sharing experiences.
Best,
Peter
