So, when we submit or resubmit the PhD thesis, are we still considered to be university students by the taxman in the UK? I am trying to figure out what taxes the government will milk out of my wages (tax, national insurance, etc.). Oooops, sorry for the spelling on the title! Blame my Saturday night party mood.
Tax rules changed recently so there are no exemptions for students any more, I found this out when I had to do some office temping recently. I was paying tax and NI at the standard rate though as the wage was fairly low I didn't have much taken out of my wages.
You pay tax if you exceed the personal allowance income threshold (currently £10,000 for this tax year). This doesn't make any difference if you are student or not. Check out HMRC's website. If you pay tax when you shouldn't have you can claim it back.
