Morning Dunni! Morning anyone else out there!
Hope your tedious job is over soon, Dunni! It's 11.11 and I've not really started yet. But that's because I have already achieved in other life goals:
Goal 1: send a rejection email with kind feedback to the guy who didn't get the conducting job with my choir - done!
Goal 2: sort out the grades for the 20 scripts I marked over the last week in advance of our moderation meeting this afternoon - done!
So now:
Goal 3: get more coffee
Goal 4: return to the seminal textbook I was reading before I decided to do the read-a-book-in-a-day to beat the inter-library loan date the other day
Evening everybody!!!
It seems like everybody has stressfull day:(But I am the worst...Next week I have crucial exam for my PhD.After it,my supervisor will decide to work with me or kick me out (hopefully not) :(
I have worked theoretical stuff for long time but I feel myself like knowing nothing:(((
I don't want to quit my thesis which is my life...I am terrified!!!
good luck for your work!!!
Morning everyone! Last night was fairly productive for my thesis. I realised there were some 'et al's missing so I went through all of the cited refs and added as necessary (yawn). I also footnoted graphs that are already in the thesis.
This afternoons goal (in the childfree quiet!) is to check over the final discussion regarding some extra refs that were added and to edit/clarify the points in it. Hope to keep the word count level.
Curisel - hope your prep for the exam is going well, good luck with it!
Star-shaped - how are the applications going?
Ady - I have several tedious jobs that always seem to progress slowly and don't feel like things are moving at all. At least my brain doesn't need to function too much lol. Hows the analysis?
Morning everyone!
Curisel- Try not to get stressed out about your exam (easier said than done, I know!). If you weren't capable you wouldn't be here doing a PhD in the first place so you can do it!
Dunni- I hope you get some productive child free time today.
My applications are now done. One has been submitted and the other is waiting for a statement from the head of department who I just got off the phone to. I was supposed to have a relaxing day off yesterday but there were a few things which needed to be chased up. But since I spoke to the HoD this morning I feel like I can stop worrying!
Today I need to get back into my thesis. I have a chapter deadline in 4 weeks so this should motivate me. My first goal today is to have a look through the bits which I have already written for it and to plan out the whole thing.
I have now planned out my chapter and have set myself a goal of getting one section of around 2000 words drafted by the end of the day on Monday. My next goal is to select my extracts for this section and to write 500 words.
Star-Shaped - well done on the applications, so nice to know that it is done after alot of stress! Sounds like you are progressing with earnest on your chapter too.
Just about to start my goal now after a mad morning of child allergic reactions and drs appointments, medicines, lotions and potions, arghh! Finally have the reaction under control, phew. Cup of tea in hand, now breathe......

'Afternoon all - everybody sounds a bit stressed. Star-shaped it'll be brill when you finally have those postdoc applics under your belt and can get back to your thesis. Dunni, your babies are giving you a tough time lately, hope they're better soon. An allergic reaction -sounds frightening??
Curisel - an exam where you feel it is make or break sounds really daunting. Hope it goes well for you.
I spent the morning in a graduate education class where we had the chance to have our CVs and cover letters overhauled as if we were applying for a postdoc etc. It was conducted by two professors who each are the director of a research institute, have interviewed many candidates for actual positions and who have also been external interviewers in other universities. Very useful
Evening anyone?.....?......no, oh well just me then!
After a fun/stressed day 'reaction' toddler is miraculously ok again but we don't know what triggers the reaction.....meds are here on standby. Hopefully it is one of those odd things that she will quickly grow out of.
Overall discussion reviewed again and unless I spend another ?000 words on the subject, the current explanations will have to do. Will be down to the sups to review now.
Word count level at the max limit so ok there (up).
Goal for tomorrow is to start annotating and adding in the last 40ish graphs.
Ady - the CV overhaul sounds like a good idea, I think mine will need addressing very soon as I hope to get my career moving again later this year. We will be moving late summer (hubby's work) so hoping to resettle for the last time (3 moves in 2.5 years is impressive lol). Any advice would be gratefully received :-)
So I would also like to share my goals for tomorrow in an attempt to be more motivated about achieving them
So here it goes
1. To do this one exp I was supposed to do today
2. To do the exp I originally have planned for tomorrow
Let's see how it goes...
Good luck everyone with achieving ur goals.
I'll keep u updated one how I did 2morrow.;-)
You've told us your goals Joanna, now you'll have to make them!! Only joking, best of luck with them(up)
Dunni, will do re: CV/cover letter info. I had included an offer to do just that with my last post but then amended in it lest people think I was pushy! Pathetic really, I'm doing a PhD you know?!?!?
Will gather my notes together and input them here later - now have supv meeting, my 2nd in a week. Previously we had not spoken on thesis related issues since October! There is also the little matter of collecting a few bundles of exam scripts from him:-s
Morning everyone. I have got into bad habits the last few days and didn't get up until 9.50. But so far I have actually submitted the second of my applications!
My goal for today is just really to feel like I am making some progress with the chapter I have just started, as I didn't feel like I did yesterday.
morning all!!!
Thank you Dunni,Star-shaped and Ady:)
Dunni-I hope your baby is better now.And about moving:it sounds like tedious if you move a lot!! Last year I moved Spain to do part of my Phd and when I was there I moved twice! It was fun for me.But with hubby and babies I can not imagine..best of luck and have the fun:)
I am better now.I had meeting with my prof. yesterday and new meeting will be on Monday.
New goal, new sections should be finished today!!
Let's do goals were done:)
Morning everyone!
Star-shaped, I'm glad to hear you got your applications done, that must be a relief!
I had a great day out on Wednesday in London - spent most of the day in the British Museum, never been there before, incredible place! And the seminar yesterday was fantastic - really stimulated a lot of thoughts about my approach, and I met lots of really important and interesting people, and managed to have a good chat to the woman who I and my supervisors secretly hope will agree to be my external examiner (and she's lovely, and would be fab I'm sure!)
Back to reality today, after a lie-in because I was just so exhausted! Goals for today:
1.) Email PhD students from other university who I met yesterday and promised to send a paper to
2.) Email list of potential interviewees sent to me by one of the organisations I'm studying and set up appointments
2.) Write up notes from yesterday's seminar and send to supervisors
3.) Think through the implications of the things I heard yesterday and make notes for own work
4.) Continue thinking about/revising my questionnaire
