The One Goal Thread

D

Afternoon everyone!  I hate stats too lol. I was top in the class at B.Sc level yet feel I know nothing about it these days, very worrying!  All my stats are scienced based - regressions, correlations and means comparisons, so a more basic set of tests :-) I did pay for SPSS tutorial so I could understand the latest software better.  I also put a query to the uni stats department which drew a complete blank from them. Fortunately my sup found an alternative method (from 1914) of linearising the data for ease of stats testing, phew!  That was enough headache for me :$

Anyway, for today I plan to finish adding ch 5 graphs (mostly done last night) and then start on ch 6 graphs. Aim is to complete all graph additions and the contents page by the end of the week.  That means my final draft will be completed and sent to sups, yeah!!!

P

Batfink I wish my place had similar service! I too thought getting the statistician to do all the work was outrageous, but the person got his PhD.... fortunately, my morals just won't allow for something like that!

Right, so today's task so far:
redo my stats I did yesterday with the right tests - done
run stats on two more variables - done
write the discussion, limitation and contribution of this study - done

drop in the second study from a published paper
adapt the second study to fit in better with the chapter

I forgot to add write some simple lit for the former study, maybe I should do that next before going onto another study...

so much to do, so little time to do it in!

P

wow Dunni, you are sooooo close!! I am so impressed with your progress!!

*go Dunni go Dunni go Dunni go Dunni*

S

Well done Dunni! You can relax and enjoy yourself this weekend after sending your chapters to your supervisors...

I am really starting to struggle. Not helped by the fact that my OH is recovering from surgery a few days ago and wants me to watch a movie with him. I WILL do a draft analysis of one final extract before finishing for the day.

P

Can I just say that, as someone that works alone at home, I am sooooooo thankful of this forum, and particularly this thread. I get so much motivation and encouragement from you guys :)

Star-shaped, I hope your husband recovers well and quickly. Is it possible to sit with him through the film but with your laptop? ;)

I agree, pink_numbers. I mostly work from home too (two days a week on campus, the rest at home) and there's something about starting the day by setting my goals and stating them here, and then seeing other people working towards their goals, that really keeps me going.

Anyway, I'm running out of energy today. I've been pulling together all the different elements I need to include in my re-worked journal article, including lots of literature. When my brain's clearer tomorrow I'm going to sort all these bits out and fit them into my structure, and then get on with writing. But my brain is fried, so I need to move onto some easy admin type jobs for the rest of the day, I think.

D

Ok managed to get my goals done for today;
1. add ch 5 graphs to thesis - to finish DONE
2. add ch 6 graphs to thesis DONE
3. update contents page DONE

Only have page numbers to add to contents page but have not done all in case things get moved around. Thesis now uploaded for sups to see, email notification sent to them! PDF copy sent to brother (has a printing business lol) for him to print and return to me for proof-reading :-) My brain is now also fried and I need some sleep ;-)

Oooo Dunni, a full draft pdf - BRILLIANT (up)

S

Well done Dunni. I hope you're taking a well deserved rest today.

I didn't achieve my last goal yesterday of doing one more analysis because I got into a bit of a sticky spot. So my first goal today, after emailing my sup who is finishing his sabbatical next week, is to work out the bit which I'm stuck on.

P

wooo hooo Dunni!! that's an amazing achievement! Now you can relax for the whole weekend! Which one of us have actually had an entire weekend off in goodness knows how long?

Congratulations Dunni, that's fantastic! Definitely time to enjoy a lovely relaxing weekend....

And good morning everyone!

I went to bed really early last night (9.30) and slept really well, and now I'm cracking on with work. Goals for today:

1.) Sort out structure of journal article - DONE
2.) Identify key bits of literature to discuss - DONE
3.) Send a couple of emails about an event I'm organising - DONE
4.) Start drafting journal article - this is the big task for today
5.) Do laundry, washing up, tidying in small breaks from work (my flat is a right mess at the moment...)

T

Congratulations Dunni for your full draft! I wish I was you :-) I'll get there too, hopefully before being old :-)

Yesterday's goal is uncompleted, I still need to finish to improve the paper that bounced back with referee's comments and requests. It takes me quite a lot of energy because it's a paper on a research topic different from my PhD subject. So I have to go back to papers that I read ages ago.

Have a productive day

S

I spent the last couple of hours realising that my analysis wasn't working because the structure of the whole thing needs revising. I now have a handle on how I think I should reorganise things, so that is my next goal.

D

Thank you everyone, your support and this thread has certainly kept me going!  Sup 1 (uni) will start reading it on monday, sup 2 (ext) will read it over the weekend and sup 3 (ext) is noted to be very quiet via email lol. I therefore have no specific goals for the weekend!  I will get a paper copy delivered over the weekend for proofing next week. Have ordered a Kindle so will upload PDF papers onto it if it arrives over the weekend :-x

So I think that my goal is to have a rest and catch up with hubby for the weekend, first in a long while Pink Numbers .

Batfink - you are working well today so the sleep must have done to some good.
Star-Shaped - hope the analysis goes well today, it is such a good feeling to get it done correctly.
Tusco - Journal refs comments are a pain so good luck with those.  In fact I have a possible paper I could get on with now...

S

I have now reorganised my analysis. For some reason this seemed like a huge daunting task.

My goal for the rest of the day is to pad it out, include a couple more extracts and up my word count by at least 500.
