Hello mate, for a post doc position, you're looking at around 20K starting, which may go up after you have a bit more experience and a few positions under your belt. As for industry, well you are likely to get a bit more, say around 25K after a PhD. What an academics pay is i dont really know - my supervisor drives a big fat BMW so im assuming he's comfortable!
I've just left industry to do a phd so can tell you what current phd salaries in industry are. Smaller companies pay 25K plus to start. Bigger ones like glaxo start you off on 30K and are likely to go up quicker and by more. Worth it eh?????
Academics get less - about 21K for a new lecturer.
Hi Martin, your question is both intelligent and businessman-like. Its important to know where yu r going b4 yu start. But I think there is more to PhD than salary depending on how you market yourself as a Doctor. ..Think of appointments in your specialist area -Federal, Political, advisory, with big portfolios and trappings. PhD is a good catalist if you are upward looking!
