things that are making us mad today ....

A

Going to the library very organised with a list of references I needed to photocopy and books I needed to get out and loosing said list somewhere about half way through finding the journal articles

K

Setting up all of a PCR reaction, but when it comes to add the last chemical realise that it has run out and there is no more.

D

hmmm nothing really I'm actually fairly happy, couple more hours reading and that may change! But for now may I offer a hug to all those feeling mad!

Having to share a computer room...only now do I realise how lucky I was that I had my own computer in my supervisor's office. My computer has now been "borrowed" to drive the Mass Spec and until I get it back I'm in the PhD student's computer room. Bloody hell it's noisy - yakking and rustling of crisp packets and beeping of phones, and fidget-arses that wander round and round the room. I feel sorry for thise who have to share all the time.

juno, from long experience, I'd recommend investment in some earplugs, or decent headphones to block out noise.

making me mad, spending the last couple of hours worrying about a strange flashing icon on my new mobile before working out it was telling me I had new messages.

C

The fire alarm went off twice today in the library. Not so much irritating since it got me out of (paid) work. And I got to spend unexpected time in the presence of my work colleague crush...

So not mad at all today!

J

Thanks Aliby, I had thought of earplugs but I wondered if people would consider me rude for wearing them in a public room. I guess not if you wear them too.

P

LOL @ aliby!!! Reminds me of the time my friend bought a new quadbike and couldn't work out why it wouldn't start. After much swearing and threatening to do various painful things to the salesman, decided to read the manual and discovered you had to be sitting on the seat for it to start! Tee hee.

Today I am getting mad at the NCBI website. Could they make the accession number system any more complicated if they tried?

A

TBH juno I've given up worrying about what people think.

OMG - does this mean I am becoming the stereotype arrogant academic with no care for personal appearance and no social skills

At the mo tho I think it has to be whatever gets me through this bloomin PhD. And i have to admit I have given up trying to work in the communal room we've got and just work at home now (lucky enough to be able to do that).

J

LOL Aliby. And I hope I didn't sound like I was suggesting you were arrogant: I think earplugs are a great idea. My hair covers my ears anyway. Now I just need something to cover my 'orrible greasy hair.

Mind you it's interesting seeing how terratorial people get over their little bit of the room. There's little notes stuck on every surface with bollocking reminders not to do this or that and to damn well keep your bags/books/self off this/that/the other. And God forbid you go near anyone elses biscuits; there's near warfare breaking out on that issue.

My server has been down most of the weekend, and I had a report due today! Thankfully I did the work at the department, otherwise I would be even more pissed off that I was already am! Going to see a counselor so stressing about that instead!

A

juno, no, no worries, it just got me thinking about how much i have changed since I started this PhD - and not for the best

people being territorial, tell me about it. Mugs - if you use someone elses mug it is like you shagged their boyfriend/girlfriend.

P

I will tell you what is making me mad today - people who steal. Some little sod has stolen a pot of parsley off our front verandah! It was one of those ones you buy at the supermarket and can replant it at home to grow it, or just use it for cooking as it is. It was tiny. It was parsley. It was worthless. But some little poo-head walked up our driveway, climbed the stairs past our front door, and walked past the loungeroom windows to snitch it. How rude! I am mad. What a welcome to a new city.
