I have been researching various options for transcribing qualitative interviews. Verbatim seems like a waste of some time. I have read about gist, or summarizing, but I do not want to be that loosey-goosey. The practice that has attracted my attention is coding audio. It seems like a great idea, and once coded and analyzed, transcribe specific passages. I found a few research articles on this practice. I have completed one other qual study, and transcribed interviews. I get much more out of listening over and over to the actual voice. I realize coding words is useful, but coding audio seems more useful & more streamlined. I would not be embedding any audio in an online journal or anything, just using audio for coding.Basically, thoughts on transcription methods besides verbatim. Any transcription methods I am missing? Thanks in advance.
