hi guys...nearing the end of my second year at sheffield doing BSc (Hons) Psychology but already considering PhD, which is available minus a masters at this uni. Any pointers on minimum degree classificaton grades for acceptance? Also apprehensive as to what to expect from the course...is it a difficult transition from BSc? If so, how much so? What kind of fees am i going to expect to be paying out, and is it worth it??? thanks in advance :o)
You will need a 2:1 or a first class degree. PhD study is totally different from undergraduate study. Firstly, a PhD is not a 'course', it is a research training degree where you will undertake a novel research project under the supervision of a team of advisors (2 or 3 people). There may also be some short taught courses. Be prepared to work very hard, at least full-time hours with far less holiday time than undergrads. Try chatting to some existing PhD students at Uni to get a better idea of what PhD study involves. Good luck :o)
I'm currently a 2nd year PhD student. I went straight from my BSc (2.1) with no masters and while they say that you cover alot of the reading in a masters i think if you have a geniune interest in the PhD topic you will do the necessary reading. Another factor which i think is important is your BSc Dissertation, if you have any choice about the topic i would pick one that you're really interested in and would be like to research at PhD level. Makes a difference I think!
