Want to do a PhD - any advice please?

C

Hi,

This may sound like a bizarre question, but having checked through brochures and web sites, the vast majority of PhDs appear to be in Science. I am a Management Consultant, working for myself, but have an interest in social science and criminology.

I have a BSc in social science and a Masters in IT. I have four years work experience in criminal justice.

I would consider a PhD elsewhere in Europe/overseas - I am in London.

And no - I do not have a subject matter to which I could focus on.

Does anyone know of sites/info of where recommedations could be made?

Many thanks.

S

As a former Management consultant myself (also then in London), I've been through what you're going through.

In terms of topics, obviously doing something that interests you is an essential prerequisite. However, in practical terms have a look at what is being advertised on this website. Also have a look at individual universities and their suggested PhD topics. Then talk with the prospective supervisor direct. In some cases, it is possible to get "blue sky" PhDs where you propose your own topic and find a supervisor for it. However, these are hard to get! Good luck!

Thanks for the prompt response.

Would it be possible to do a PhD part time whilst working?

S

I think quite a few people on here do that. I can't really advise on that aspect (I'm an FT PhD) but I'm sure they can.

I know Birkbeck in London do p/t PhDs but you're limited to whatever their specialisms are (assuming they cover your field). The others may be more helpful

And do they start at the beginning of an academic year or any anytime?

S

PhDs can start at any time, but usually either at the start of Semester 1 (Oct) or Semester 2 (Feb)

I'm PT in social sciences - it is tough when you work as well, but you do what you have to do to get it done. There is so little funding around that a lot of people only study PT. All universities should offer a PT option.
