What is the difference between PHD and MD

S

I was reading a job ad. and they mentioned an MD thesis. I know that the term MD means different things in different countries, so what does it mean in England ? and how does it differ from a phd?

A

In the UK it means a medical doctorate and can be thought of as a 'PhD for medical doctors'. You usually have to be registered with the GMC to do one. It is PhD 'level' but takes 2 years full time (hence, less work is expected).

S

So if you are a medical docotor you can either do phd or MD

K

Right in a way, if you are a medical doctor you can do both PhD and MD but if you are a non-medico you can not do a MD.
But I disagree that MD and PhD are same. MPhil and MD are similar. It depends on the type of problem you are pursuing, like both the medico and non-medico can work in a medical field but in case of research in surgical field there are some restrictions for non-medicos.
But PhD is the ultimate degree in research. It doesn't matter if you are medico or not, PhD is same for both.
And yes never expect less work in MD. It is a very difficult degree.
Tell me from which field you are.

K

Ahhh, so *that's* what an MD is in the UK!

In the US, is it the term for a medical doctor's first qualification?

I am a neurologist

R

Hi Sosa,

I am a bit puzzled by your remark "I am a neurologist"

I was also puzzled by the terms like MD and PhD as I am from Holland where you normally would use:
1. medical graduation ( =doctorandus)
2. if you do your promotion you will be "doctor"
3. if you get your specialist registration your will be neurologist etc.

Most specialists would, I presume, see their specialist registration as the most important.

I am a General Practioner and am trying to do my MD

Regards

S

Hi Rick
My remark "I am a neurologist" is in response to the "tell me what is your field" in one of the responses above. It is rather surprising though. I had to read the whole thing again to remember why I put that remark in.

R

Ah,

thanks

Was just a bit surprised, that's all.

How is your research going?

S

I have given up on applying for a PHD sometime ago. However, I am working on my MD thesis at home. It is not going on very slowly, but I gues it is always that way when you need to collect data from patients.

R

Yes

must be time consuming.

I am not at that stage yet, still reading around quality im medical care to be able to set an actual research question.

Good to hear that you are doing your MD as well

S

Good luck with your work
