the classification of grades in the uk is typically like this:

first class honours is awarded for average grades 70%
an upper second class honours also called 2.1 is 60-70%
a lower second class honours also called a 2.2 is 50-60%
a third is 40-50%

rjb203,

ok ,i understood it on the percentage way.

do you have any idea how they convert An African degree grade in to a UK equivalent.?

Hi

Most universities will give a country by country breakdown or requirements. As far as I understand it a 3.5/5.0 is the absolute minimum you need as that is what universities consider to be closest to a UK 2:1. The grading system is different across Africa, many states use the UK system of a 1:1, 2:1, etc, so you can't ask how they convert 'African' degrees. Also, the 3.5 requirement varies country to country - I know an example where my old Uni would accept 3.5 from a Nigerian student, but a Ugandan had to have a 3.6 minimum.

You are obviously operating on a different system to the UK. I'm not sure if I can help you with the conversion/interpretation but just a word of correction, Africa is not a monolithic continent with one education system for all the 50 odd countries. Some have a British system and the same degree grading system as the UK. If you want a comparability assessment for your degree you can get one from UK-NARIC if you google their website. They will charge a fee for the service though. Good luck.
