Hi

So I am currently writting my masters's thesis and my supervisor has told me my figures are labeled incorrectly. My question is this, if I want to put two figures in section 1.2 do I call them figure 1a and figure 1b or just figure 1.1 and 1.2?

Either:
Figure 1,2,3,4 etc (i.e. no chapter/ section numbers) OR
Figure 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 (with with first number representing the chapter number).

Letters make it overly complicated.

Thanks for the answers but what I'd really love to know is when do you use a lowercase letters to denote figures. When should I use, for example, figure 1.1 and 1.2 rather than 1.1a and 1.1b.
