Apologies! I know that questions about conferences have appeared in several threads recently, but I just wanted to get an idea of when I should start thinking about presenting at one? I understand that is a bit of a silly question, as it will vary from person to person. The thing is, I'm seven months in--should I seriously be considering it now, or should I hold off until I feel more comfortable with my area? Cheers everyone!
you should do it ASAP (as long as they are relevant)
you need to be familiar with these things to gain confidence, and looks great on your c.v.
even if you just attend the first one and get an idea of what they are like and present at the following ones
I would always put in an abstract to see if it gets accepted - then worry about whether you know enough or not later

I was encouraged to do a paper within 2 months of starting which shocked me. Thankfully I didn't submit an abstract - and just attended the conference instead - and I'm glad I did - as I now realise what goes into the process.
We are told at my institution that we should aim for at least one paper a year.
Science is not only about learning.
It is also about interaction. However
if you have nothing to present, conferences
can be quite depressing.
Young PhD's should go first to summer schools
or winter schools. These are usually much better
organized, much less hectic, and much more didactic.
