I finally found the person I wish to become my phd supervisor, but he is in a foreign university, shall i still contact him and ask whether he can give me a topic and a contact person in the country I wish to stduy? Is it possible that my primary supervisor will not be directly related to my work?
As far as research goes all university departments are graded in the Research Assesment Exercise (RAE). 5 and 5* departments are the best. The RAE takes place once every 6 years. The results of RAE 2001 can be found at www.hero.ac.uk/rae/
Students do sometimes work in a different location from their supervisor, but this is usually a result of the supervisor relocating after the studentship has begun and the student choosing to stay put. The best thing to do is email the supervisor and ask them if it's possible. I expect that if you are wanting to do a PhD in the sciences it may be very difficult. Please let others on the forum know what reply you get.
