I don't think it works like that in the USA. You have to sit training courses before you begin the PhD and this takes 6 to 7 years in total. Why not think about doing a PhD in the UK?

Yes, if you're interested in the UK I could tell you a list as long as my arm. US I know nothing.

Could you please give me a list of the top ten universities in the UK that offers such programmes. Please do not hesitate to add any websites that are useful.

Through a couple of research I did notice that the US take twice as much time as the UK. I intend to apply hopefully for sept 2011 with all goes well. I am hoping that they re-assess their education system and offer a faster route etc.

I have studied in the UK for such a long time that I wanted to spread my wings and experience a new environment.
