Is it advisable to get lab experience between an MSc and a PhD?

I think it depends on the type of MSc you did (taught or research). I took 2 years out after my MSc before doing my PhD and worked in science (although not always lab science) for a well-known British company. However, it didn't make any difference when I started as I still felt a little awkward. I think it is more important to find a group that you will 'fit in' with and enjoy your time with.
