As the American writer Mark Twain's characters one observed, work is what a person is obliged to do, and play is what you are not obliged to do...having just shifted down to part time and soon to be no work, so as to get my PhD done, the PhD has moved from 'play' to 'work'. Not to say I did not take it seriously, but it felt much different when I was trying to do it on top of full time work. Now it is starting to have a different feel altogether...or perhaps I just need a break.
I made that transition when I got funding in september after a year of self funding.
Now the phd is very much work - and what seemed a pleasure a few months ago is no hellish. Oh well, "det var det, det".
