I graduate next year (microbiology), but am thinking of taking a year out, getting a bit of work experience, earn some money and go travelling. will this be frowned upon if i apply for a PhD (starting 2006)?

I took 3 years out! I went travelling for a year after my masters and then worked for 2 years. My work was very relevant to my PhD topic now and I think was probably the reason I was chosen for it. So, it worked out great! Good luck
