Hi all, I'm currently in my late twenties and finishing a part time MSc Computer Science degree in London this year. My BSc degree was in Music & Electronics so the MSc degree is more of a conversion masters.
I would love to continue onto a PhD but I'm not a specialist in any particular area which seems a barrier to me continuing my studies. I have thought about doing an MRes but as it would be a second masters I wouldn't qualify for a UK government loan.
Full time study would not be an option for me as I have a mortgage and unfortunately need to pay the bills!
Are there any funded Masters courses in this area? I've heard of 4 year PhD's that include taught elements in the 1st year, would this be a good option for me and are there many available?
Would love to hear from anyone with a similar experience.
Cheers, chumbo
Many PhD students aren't specialised in any particular area. It's the PhD that helps you to specialise.
Try to apply for PhDs and see what you can get. If you're a competitive candidate then you should be able to get funding, if you're restricted to a certain geographical area that might be trickier. Also consider job opportunities post PhD, which in general aren't that good.
Those four year PhDs you are talking about are usually very competitive.
