I've managed to receive an offer for a PhD but unfortunately not received funding. I am looking for funding externally and am optimistic I might be able to obtain it, but I was wondering whether institutions/peers etc. viewed candidates differently based on whether they received internal/external funding (since clearly they think the ones who are internally funded are better)?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Hello. I do not think they appreciate internally funded students more than externally funded ones. However they tend to accept externally funded candidates easier as they do not have to pay them from department money.
