Unsatisfying answer I know but the truth is that it will vary. Many projects are multidisciplinary in nature and so involve more than one department.

Mine is between two departments and its not an equal split but still adds up to the EPSRC total

Mine is comes from the funding (from the funding council) given to each supervisor from the different departments but this is not always going to be the case.

As you have studentships but if you get funding from both then you don't qualify or is that a different pot of money?

If you went through a departmental studentship you wouldn't qualify if you have half from each for a full studentship. So do they have other funding for 1/2 studentships?

Sorry I mean if you have 1/2 a studentship from one dept and 1/2 from another.

Okay you have one studentship.

However you want it to be funded by 2 departments. Now a department can't give you a whole studentship as it takes it away from someone else.

The funding won't be external it will be internal.
