PhD by Published Works
G

Thanks for your explanation... I found it useful! My situation is that I work in industry and am looking to gain a PhD to help achieve the longer term aim of becoming a business consultant. The PhD by published work route seems to be the best method as I will be able to vary my research time scales according to the publishable developments within the company and ideally without committing large sacks of cash.

Does anyone know if this route is only available to staff or alumni of a particular university?

Smilodon - what are your times scales, both for the publication of your 3/4 papers and the thesis? Surely this is a more cost effective method of achieving a PhD?

Could you point me in the right direction please - I can't seem to find the response I am looking for?

Does anyone know roughly how many publications you need to have written to apply for a PhD by published work?

Many Thanks.

Is it right that you can't apply for a PhD while you are enroled on a Masters ?

would you quit your PhD?

Chrisrolinski... I'm new to this, so let me get this right. Once you've become a Dr you can publish idependantly and get paid for it?

PhD vs. Industrial Experience

Dear Forum,

Currently considering studying a PhD, but I am unsure if my motivations are right?

I am doing a Masters but don't intend to stay in research and would simply like to study a PhD to allow me to progress my career further.

What would a PhD give me that a Masters and 3/4 years industrial experience wouldn't? Does anyone know of published salary figures of people who have studied PhD's - is it worth the investment of time and money if I don't intend to be an academic?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.....

Can anyone advise on the considerations that need to be taken when selecting to study a PhD full or part time? Have people found that the decision is made for them by the University or is it purely based on an individual’s financial position?

Thanks guys - it seems as if most Universities do make work space provisions !

sooo very tired.....

Do you get many opportunities for freelance work when studying a PhD ? Is it generally through the University or off your own back ?

I am not doing one yet, but would like to soon !

Thanks Vince! So the Uni is not obliged in any way to provide a desk/work area for PhD students? I guess working along side researchers is always going to improve your PhD, rather than working in isolation at home...

What are people's experiences of this?

I am currently searching for a full time PhD, but a little unclear about the basic setup... Where are you expected to study it? Does every student get given a nice little desk in the University somewhere or do you only spend time in Uni when your meeting with your supervisor and do the majority of the work from home?
