Hi, in one Phd. application they write in the requirements "good 2:1". Can you tell me in numbers what percentage this means? In my previous school, the only grading schema they have is "Distinction", "Merit", and "Pass". There is nothing I found in their website about 2:1 or anything like that.
Try to do some good projects or research related to your major. If you got the chance to work with experienced people, ask them for recommendations. Recommendations plays a good roles as far as I know in the admission judgement. Or, try to lower your university ranking standards. Manchester is still considered a good university in the CS. If you applied to other university you may get a chance.
In my opinion. PhD passing. PhD is almost a one chance. If you failed it, it is hard to fix. Publishing an article in a journal can be fixed. You receive the comments, you have chance to repair your work, submit it again, and again. You have many journals. If one did not accept your work, the other might be. However, there is no one that can constitute the other value. The PhD is a degree and publishing is something else. There is no guarantee that if you published your work, then, you pass the PhD. The PhD depends on the examiners. So, you should put your mind onto passing your PhD first. That is what I think.
Thanks for your responses folks. The university ranking is very high & worldwidly recognized. Because of this advantage I'm thinking of it but with another supervisor this time. I thought I might be exaggerating on my feelings of not thinking of them again because of this issue. That's why I wanted to hear from someone else.
The other thing is that, as a Phd. student, my relationship is mainly concerned with the supervisor.
I have studied my masters in a university but had dispute with them that I sent to OIA (for unis in UK). I had several issues in my thesis evaluation and supervision. However, the OIA replied that my complaint is not justified. The issue closed since then.
Now, there is a new professor in my X-Dept. which I find his research interests/publication match mine.
I am hesitating because of the previous issue with the dept. specially that the people that I complained against are still there including my supervisor/dept. head. I feel I will not be comfortable in terms of the research group as a whole, but this professor is the right one (professionally, as I have no clue about his personality). The university is high ranking one. Honestly, although I am totally convinced that my previous complaint was justified, I regret that I did it as I feel it damaged my relationship with the department.
If you are in my shoes, will you apply there in that uni. and research group again? Does universities admission accept applicants who made complaints against them? Do you think it is Ok or better to forget about this uni. and look for other options?
@ywan459: It is both.
@TreeofLife: If it is my choice, I would select some other people. But what is the university is asking specifically for the last supervisor details? Probably, if I ignored them & provided someone else's info., they would consider this dishonesty?
