Thanks for replying TreeofLife, appreciate that. I bit the bullet and contacted my supervisor about it, just waiting for a reply now.

Part-time, self funded PhD - to give it up for a funded full-time PhD??
I

I enrolled in a part – time fully funded PhD in Oct 2014. After completing a year part-time (literature review and starting to examine primary sources) I suspended studies for personal family reasons. I then had to extend my suspension for financial reasons, being that my personal life situation had changed somewhat and I could not afford to pay fees. My supervisor has been extremely patient and understanding, however I am currently at a crossroads. I have signed the suspension form with the intention of recommencing study in the next academic year, however I know that realistically I will not be able to afford to continue.

At the same time an opportunity to apply for funding at another university with a very strong research department in my field has come up. Due to publication and professional experience I might stand a chance, despite having a shaky BA, and an OK (pass but points away from a merit) MA. I have been in touch with the potential department, who are aware of my work and they have encouraged me to apply. However, how can I tell my current supervisor? I know I could finish the PhD in 3 years maximum with the funding giving me the freedom to focus on it and not on full-time work. I would like to leave things in an amiable enough manner that if I did not get the funding I could reapply to my current university once government funding starts in 2018. Your thoughts, comments or advice would be greatly appreciated!
