If you look through there's a few topics on this. In the UK most (well science at least) PhD's start as an MPhil you get transferred onto the PhD providing you do well enough in the first year. You still complete in 3 years, the MPhil's basically a safety net incase you really mess up and find you can't cope then you still end up with another qualification instread of completing one year of a PhD.

I'm a postgrad student (finally found a uni that didn't pull its course just before the start date if anyone remebersmy last post). I'm starting applying for PhD's in science / chemistry and there are a few at the ame uni that I'm interested in. I was just wondering if your expected to only apply / enquire about one, or if they understand people applying for several at once?

Hope someone can offer some advice.

Yeah its a taught course in 'Advanced Materials' at The University of Nottingham. I was meant to be doing an MRes at my first uni but as I said they pulled the course. I'm only doing the masters as a 'stepping stone' to a PhD. I know the MSc's a different structure, I just hoping I can convince them that I can handle a MPhil / PhD and then maybe start it in January after the first set of exams providing I do really well.

If only I didn't have a 2:2 BSc none of this would be necessary

I've since applied to another uni at been accepted, thankfully, the catch is that all the funding and bursaries have already been alocated. After talking to the graduate school one option that was mentioned was possibly transferring to an MPhil once I start. Then my school should have funding from the EPSRC they'll be able to give me as Masters students aren't considered. I'm planning to do a PhD anyway, so I wouldn't be doing anything I wasn't going to do later.

Does anyone know of this has bening done?

Moving isn't really an option I just moved back to Nottingham from Manchester in order to do the original course, my accomidation is already sorted for the next year.

I've just been given a conditional offer from Nottingham uni for the MSc in Advanced Materials so I think I'm sorted now, thanks for you advive guys

I know its not a guarantee but my chances are a hell of a lot better than without one.

The only two alternatives seem to be nanoscience or adv materials at Nottingham University.

Yeah I got a 2:2 due to medical probelms in my final year, so the only way I'll get funding through any of the research councils for a PhD is to do a masters as a stop gap.

Right I got the dreaded e-mail from uni yesterday, they;re not going to run the course I've been accepted on since novrmber last year.
I'm a chemist and I was going to do an MRes in Adv Material Chemistry at nottingham trent uni. There's a few alternatives at the University of Nottingham but they are mostlty taught MSc's in Nanoscience or Advanced Materials.
I'm doing a masters so I am can do PhD and was aadvised that the more research heavy the better.

Has anyone been in this situation or better yet does anyone know what the departments at UoN are like? Any advice would be great I'm pulling my hair out.

I've been looking for some current reviews of chemisrty departments the only things I can find though are teh 2001 RAE reports and the times good university guide.

Are there any current reviews which break down the overal university score into department raitings?

A carreer developent loan's also something to look into. I can afford the fee;s just not the living expensise or rent. Funding for most masters coursers is virtuallu non-existant. I know its been said but its worth contacting the school / uni finance depertment as they'll have details of any bursaries avaliable.

Don't know if this is abit late (if it is at least you know for next time but if you want to force the entire table onto one page do the following:
File Page Set Up
the select the 'Page' tab you can specify how many pages you want the data to fit on.

I'm a Chemist and about to go back to uni to do Masters. For your degree I'd try and get a masters / PhD that focuses on the pharma or bio side. I'm not 100% sure about the state of forensics graduates in Ireland but in the UK there are far more graduates with forensics degrees than there are jobs.
