When it comes to applying for academic jobs would the fact they someone self funded their PhD be a disadvantage?

Aso to be self funded would a university say accept as proof of ability to complete the PhD a £80,000 flat with no mortgage? Do they require something else?

I got a high 2:1 (67 average) from LSE in politics. What are my chances of getting funding after my MA for a political theory PhD. I think i can only apply to AHRC but not ESRC though am unsure. Do departments only tend to give awards to those with firsts?

I have offers from both Durham and York to do a politics MA and can't decide where to go. York would cost me alot more but it has a better reputation for politics and i'd like to do a PhD. I'm unsure how important a department's rep at MA level is to getting a PhD place. Any ideas?

Thanks. It just seems odd that if I go and do an MA at Durham i'll have problems with PhD funding. Makes me wonder why they bother.

What effect does an MA have on whether you get funding or not for a PhD?
I am interested in doing an MA however it is not ESRC recongised. Will this pose problems when I apply for PHD funding? Does the MA have to be ESRC recognised to get PhD funding? Or is there no problem and this only means I won't be eligible for financial support for the MA but still be eligible for financial support for a PhD? (The MA is in the social sciences).

How important is where you do your MA to whether you get onto a PhD? I'm a politics student and have offers for an MA from both Durham and York. I've been told that I may struggle with getting onto a PhD if i go to Durham. What do you think?

What influence does the content of your MA have on an applicants chances of being accepted onto a PhD? Is it very significant?

I hope to do a PhD on a topic which would be more well suited to an MA at one uni than another. However it is the one that is not as relvant that I prefer in terms of general rep, location, campus etc. Nonetheless both are political thought courses and its in pol thought which i wish to specialise in. Is this sufficient?

I guess i could do my dissertation on the topic i wish to focus on at Phd level and both offer research training.
