quitting after 1 year
J

There is no shame in quitting, don't beat yourself up. I agree with the suggestion to take time out. Think about it and if you really feel you don't want to do it, there is no long run benefit and you'll just be miserable then drop out as you need to do what is right for you. If you think you'll regret dropping out then try and keep at it for a bit longer. First year is very hard (though I'm finding second year is no picnic either).

Too many other things to do.

Unfortunately from what I've seen and experienced myself this is just part of the PhD process. My first year wasn't too bad but I have felt exactly the same as you do for the last 6 months, I am only just now getting to a point where I've dealt with most of those other commitments. Even then, I will only get about a month of complete focus on my research then it will be split focus again for the rest of the year with the many other commitments.
All you can really do is push on as best you can and if there are any extra commitments stressing you out that you are able to drop, drop them so that you can focus more on your research.

Do you think we should have an 'introduce yourself' thread?

Hi all,
I'm jm and I'm 27. I'm in my second year of a PhD in Economics. I'm from Australia

How old were you - starting the phd?
J

I was 25 when I started. I should be 29 when I finish but we'll see-these things are hard to predict

Second month of PhD!!!

Well done on the progress so far

Life after PhD
J

I'm trying not to think about life after the PhD so much, I need to concentrate on finishing first (still about 2 years left) but I definitely want to be an academic. I'm thinking I'd like to do a postdoc as I like research but as I say, too early to think about it now. I'll have a better idea of options when I've made more progress
