Guidance on what to do
J

I wondered if you could give me a bit of advice. I was 6 months into my phd and then became unwell - I have the opportunity to start a job which would be similar to my previous job which I enjoyed ok but it was v busy and I hardly got a break. I have the option of returning to my phd and get funding which would be less than the salary but still the funding is ok. How do I decide what to do? In some ways I prefer working, but I would like the acheivmeg of a phd. Also, the financial end would direct me to taking a job. Your advise would be welcome. Thanks.

What can I do to help myself

If I was 18 I wouldnt be thinking about a phd but rather having fun, going on breaks and things like that. Think about it in a few years when u start uni.

Thinking of Quiting my PhD
J

Hi, I done about 1 year of my phd and then left and returned to work. I didn't find the phd very interesting, and I preferred knowing I had finished work when I went home.

I know people who did it for the titl, but in reality no one cares and family support whatever you do.

Life is short and don't persist with things you hate - We only live once.

Though stay n the course for a while while job searching if you are funded as at east then you have are revenue stream for while. Keep me up to date with developments.

Relationship, career, PHD help needed!

Do what makes you happy.

Answer the below 3 questions
Does the idea of a phd excite you?
Why are you looking to do a phd?
What do you want from life?

I left my phd after a year as I found it v isolating and I thought about it in evenings - now I don't worry and have lots of time with my partner which is great.

This is just all wrong
J

Well done on your decision. I did the same and am glad I did - I found it too boring and work better at practical things with lots of others...

The main thing in life is that we are happy - do what makes you happy and don't worry about disappointing people as they will support you whatever even if it takes a bit f time for hem to come around.

Good luck

Please someone say something..anything to help me
J

Take very day as it comes. You are fortunate in many ways - ESP with your daughter. What are your priorities in life? All will work out and worrying won't help. I know it's east to say don't worry but it ain't that easy.

Decided to quit my PhD
J

Well done on making you decision. I left my phd after 9 months and people arund me said you must complete it. But, it was not something I enjoyed as I am not the type who enjoys working in isolation. The most important thing in life is to be happy. I am much happier not doing he phd which bored me.

Have you anyone else who can give you a reference from prio to stating our phd? Eg degree or postgraduate tutor. Some voluntary work may also be a good idea ....

Keep me posted

Quitting my PhD ?
J

Hi,

It depends how you feel about it. Don't leave without a reasonable job to go to if you are funded. I was funded and left as I got a job. I just found the research and isolation didn't suit me. Depends why you are doing the phd - ultimately it won't increase your salary it needs to be you living research and your area.

Unfulfilled by phd
J

I haven't felt fulfilled by my phd in comparison to my previous employment history. I have a fairly good memory though I am unable to retain information relating to my phd and I think it is because it doesn't interest me. For these reasons and financial reasons I am strongly considering quitting. I have just done 9 months, so still early days. Do you think I am doing the right thing?

Trying to find a high paid job, is it really worth it ?
J

Hi.  I started a phd last year and will most likely will not finish it. I have learned that many people in academia do not enjoy their jobs and I know friends on high and low salaries and many are happier in lower.  I have read various books on happiness and being content is key and family and friends.

I know a few people in senior positions who are very unhappy and always want to achievers more.

Do what you enjoy and keep me posted how you get on.  Even a while being a postman will give you thinking time and exercise at the same time.

We only get one life so do what makes you happy and have a laugh - for me as a phd student I didn't get enough if them.

Hate coming to "work", aka my PhD
J

I am also in year 1 of my phd and left a reasonably well paid job to do it. To be honest doing the phd has been tedious, boring and solitary and I have found anything to do but what I am supposed to do. A career in this area no longer appeals to me in various ways and I would advise you tondo what is best for you and don't worry about letting people down eg supervisors etc - ultimately they aren't that concerned about you.

I have decided to leave my phd and feel much better in myself now. The most important thing is to be happy and enjoy what you do. Though ideally stay in funded phd and collect grant until you get something else lined up but this is difficult as it's so difficult to do any work on it, but even for a while just do little and search for jobs. Keep me posted on how you get on and message me if you want more information.

Feel like quitting
J

I just feel like quitting my PhD - it takes so much energy from me and very little output. How valuable will a PhD be if I dont want to be a researcher or lecturer?

Should I continue
J

Im in year 1 of my PhD and everytime i thinkn of working in academia I am soo tired at the though of it. There is nothing that appeals to me in an academic post except the salary. I find the research boring and it lacks the interaction I need. Should I think of going back to work or continue on?

Thanks
