Hello everyone
I`m coming up to nearly 1 year of PhD. I`m a part time student working full time. At first i was really enthuiastic, reading all the time. Nowadays i can`t just seem to get into it. After i finish work all i want to do is relax and i just can`t be bothered with the PhD. I initially started it because it was something i wanted to do for me and after numerous failed attempts to get funding decided part time was the way. Work are good with time off, but i end up using all my annual leave on the PhD and the thought of another 5 years doing this is not good.
I off in 3 weeks to start an initial 2 week visit for my overseas fieldwork. The way i`m feeling now is to go out there and see how i feel when i get back but am having doubts- if it`ll be good enough to pass the viva, can i keep this up for another 5 years and working full time etc.
I don`t want to tell my supervisors of my doubts just yet. The way i`m feeling i don`t think i want to stick with the PhD- i`ve already decided i do not want to work in academia in the future.I`ve already spent £2500 on tuition fees, books, travelling and don`t want to walk away with nothing. Does anyone know any options open to me? Can i just do a MPhil- how long is an MPhil or even change it to a MSc by research? Thanks
Hi there
I started my PhD part time October 2008 and i work full time. I`m not finding it so bad at the moment as it is in the early stages but i always make sure i set aside some time everyday for my PhD- even if its just an hour on my lunch break reading books.
Motivation and dedication is definetly the key- you got this and you should be fine!
Hi there
I`ve just started my PhD part time whilst working in a full time job (mad i know). I`m thinking whether i should tell my current employer or not? I am very happy in my job and don`t wish to leave anytime in the future. I`m just wondering what others have done? Thanks:-)
I would suggest you check out IEMA's website- anyone that is anybody in the environmental field will be a member of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management) and they have alot of resources for graduates starting out in the environmental field.
You should ask yourself if you want to work in a specific field- contaminated land, waste & recycling, water, soil etc.
For some courses funding and studentships are available. NERC (National Environment Research Council) should be advertising theirs soon so thats a good place to start.
In my third year of my batchelors i decided i wanted to do a masters. Partly to prove to myself that i could do it, to increase my job opportunities and to study my chosen area of study in more detail. I am very glad i did it- possibly the best year i ever had at uni. It was a great stepping stone leading to my PhD
Hi guys
I`ve just started a part time PhD- i plan to continue working in my current job (local government) as i can`t afford not to. I`m worried that i will be missing alot of student life- meeting other students, lecturing opportunities etc. Is anyone else in this situation?
