Opinions needed about the Marine environmental management masters, York university
M

Better late than never- I took the course last year from 2009-2010 and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I did a geography degree but wanted to get more involved in the marine field and this was the perfect way. The staff are great- Julie is absolutely amazing at organising everyone and the course is really enjoyable. She's always there to chat if things get tough- she's just great. Callum is obviously a fantastic lecturer- world famous in his field and has published a lot of ground breaking important research. He's really interesting and knows a hell of a lot. Bryce is a really cool guy whose modules are fun and he's just very chilled out and always around for a chat.

The course is quite academic in terms of the work. Most of the time you're head will be in a book so if you're looking for a technical degree, this probably isn't it. Saying that there is opportuntiy to do GIS, shoreline sampling work, the egypt fieldtrip is the best thing- a once in a lifetime experience and of course the placement can be technical too. The modules are varied and interesting but most have a strong MPA theme (as is probably expected)- if this interests you then look no where else. The department has a great vibe and everyone on our course got on swimmingly- definitely made some friends for life. I will say work in the marine field is difficult and I know a few who have struggled- experience is key so make sure you get out and about for your placement. I spent 3 months in Sabah, Malaysia working on turtle excluder devices in the prawn trawling industry which was just amazing. Since graduating I took a few months off, but have recently started a graduate training scheme for RSK, an environmental consultancy- which is going great so far. Drop me a line if you'd like to know anything else
