PhD pass with Major corrections! :-( ....

Really sorry to hear this.
Quote From Jamie_Wizard:
They said they debated between minor and major ammendments,
but that even though they felt I may be able to do the ammendments within 3 months,
they felt it would be irresponsible of them to give minor ammendments given the hard
deadline to complete them. They said this would afford me more time.

Though I understand that some of the issues the examiners wanted me to address
are valid, I feel that they (as Oxbridge examiners) nit picked and were unduly harsh.
When I mentioned my work had recently been published (went to print about 10 days
before viva) in a reputable journal they snorted "Oh, that doesn't really matter".
- From my PhD I have a total of 2 full journal papers (a third has been provisionally
accepted), and 5 conference contributions around the world, and two conferences
for my previous masters.

It is horrible but I am just noticing how they were debating between minor (which most people get anyway) and major, and that it was purely the issue of timing that made them swing to major (ironically - they wanted to be kind and give you more time). This could be interpreted as minor corrections are needed so that the PhD is awarded but they will take some time to complete... vs. major corrections - will I even be able to carry them out and satisfy the examiners...?! Major is a scary word. But the fact that they were debating and told you they were debating suggests to me that you shouldn't be so worried (although it is still a terrible shock). They obviously don't think that your work is trash if they wanted to give you minor corrections but didn't in the interest of giving you more time.

I hope this helps a bit. Also - take some comfort in the fact that your papers have been peer reviewed (even if the examiners snorted at that - most people in academia do not). You will get the PhD awarded in the end.

All the best

I second that. Some of my colleagues were given major corrections just to be able to get everything done on the time given as according to my university regulations if you are given three months you have to deliver within the given time.

First of all congrats, you have already passed your viva and got a job such an achievement to celebrate. To pass is a very important milestone, in the eyes of someone who is waiting for the viva like me. My friend was just like you well published etc. and he was given a painful 18 months. Fairness does really vary which is a sad fact. In my university, it takes a month to receive the list of corrections. Enjoy your moment and you will hear back from the examiners in due course. Not easy but try :).

I have just submitted! So happy about this. My second supervisor raced through the final chapters in record time in the last couple of days once she had managed to work her way through some responsibilities and I made the corrections every time I received some feedback. Worked round the clock in the last day and evening and it has been uploaded and officially submitted.

Whew!! I will let people know of outcomes/corrections when it's marked. Most likely at least another 3 months or so before I even hear, but ah well. Best of luck to all on this thread-its a great feeling to be here at long long last. Just under 6 years to the day of starting the PhD as a part time student :) :) :).

Congrats, Pjlu. Well done.

I submitted my thesis as well almost three weeks ago and I am still waiting for dispatch confirmation. Could not enjoy the submission moment yet.

Hey
I wish you all a blessed new year.

I am content with my progress and I have 5 months till my deadline. But I feel so scared of how things will go in the upcoming months. I am done with people asking me when I will finish I am already stressed and I do not need any extra stress.

Very depressed over typos in Phd thesis...

You will be fine it happens.

Did you send your thesis to a proofreader?

Hi guys

Glad you are all progressing really well. Wish you all the best,

I want to ask you about conferences/publications. Do you wait for your supervisor's approval of a conference abstract/paper or you send it off especially if the deadlines are approaching and supervisor never get back to you?

Hi guys!

I signed up to confess PhD can get really tough. I am 65% done and this week I am really upset because my supervisor ignores my emails lately and he advised me to slow down. I am in the fourth year though and he is so chill.

I decided to keep on writing and moving on. I have little cries here and there while writing but I am determined. I am so lonely

I'm very sorry to hear this. It is so frustrating when emails are ignored. I've had the same problem. Have you tried calling up the supervisor? That doesn't always work if they don't pick the phone up but its always worth a try. Alternatively, go and see them or ask your other supervisor to chase them up.

In terms of loneliness, could you take some time away and go and see some friends or family?

Hi Hugh

Thanks for your support. It works when I email him to ask for a meeting.

I don't have family here but I am planning to take a few days off as soon as I submit a completed chapter to my supervisor.

Thanks gain.

Hi Miss29, I'm sorry to hear that it is all a struggle and you are feeling lonely. I have also felt very lonely this year, and signed up to this site for similar reasons. It's really hard when your supervisor isn't on the same page as you! Does he want you to slow down because he can't keep up with what you are asking him to review, or because he thinks the quality of your work is suffering because you are in a hurry? Crying can be a really good thing (I'm a psychologist, so I'm all about the cathartic cry!) but if it is constant its a sign that you need more support, from your supervisor or someone else.

Hi Teegs90

Thanks for your support and kind words.

Last week, I cried for the first time during this PhD tears of joy I am progressing toward a complete 1st draft and tears of fear I have a lot to do.

My supervisor is very supportive but he thinks I have time to finish and submit by September. I am running out of fund and I want to have my Viva in September. If he reads a draft of chapter every month, I can submit by the end of the Spring term.

Sorry to hear that, Miss29. I think a few of us here can relate to the pressures of being in fourth year! Hope you will hang around and let us know how you're getting on.
