I keep telling myself it is worth it, but is it? I mean am I crazy to be working so late and then working again the next day and night, even in weekends? I'm scared I wont finish in time(turkey).
please tell me how you guys deal with working the whole night. I'm really worn out.
hi Linadlou,
I know what you mean about really taking care of yourself and sleeping. I eat fairly well(whith the occassional binge and watching trash tv---what is up with the trash tv? is it because your mind does minimal thinking that we love it for a change?!!?), anyways, I'm also a runner, so exercise is not an issu, but I'm starting to see the effects of lack of sleep on me. last night I run the ussual 7km(once i start i just keep going even though I know I have a long day the next day! must be the endorphins), but I had student marking to do because I had to run a class and go to the lab by 7am the next day(today), I can bearly walk, everything seems to be taking me more concentration than normal. and the meetings are piling up!
i love that some of you guys are actually able to have personal relationships on the side!how on earth are you managing....spa would be nice, just about now...
meeting time!
chrisrolinski, that is just so sad man... I gues the walk woke you up huh?
I walk home late and have to pass through a park and tis soooo creppy...pepperspray!!!!
so tired today........MArking the students that I tutor and slowly falling into my paper..runing 7km after school was a bad idea!(turkey)
I noticed coming into office earlier than others help a lot, because by the time they arrive, I'm already focused to only have few distractions. I try not to have this forum and stuff like facebook, coz lets face it, unless you're waiting for an impotant message, they can be really distracting. I dont like working at home, which is bad because I cannot switch off when i'm at home, but I'm too tired to think (never ending cycle). music is not allowed in the lab during the day(sayfety hazard) but I listed to rap music(mostly made of swearing words) if nothing is working, I listen to movie classical scores if I'm concentrating, I listen to dance or punk rock when stuck in the lab late at night(I'm a science student), and I listen to my jogging music, when I need to hurry up with some work. So basically...I have 320Gb of music for every senario. come to think of it, I survived last year BECAUSE of music!?!?!
hey guys,
I was wondering...AM I THE ONLY PHD STUDENT WHO'S HAVING A HARD TIME TRYING TO HAVE A LIFE OUTSIDE PHD?
I'm asking because, two days ago (saturday), I decided I HAVE to try to get away from the lab(I'm a science phd student). so I went to a gig. I had only one mojito, and I was already tipsy...I only went home at 3am(which by the way is not late at all compared to when I was an undergrad), but since I had to work the next morning, I only had 3 hours of sleep(again...I used to do this all the time and nothing happened...I just cruised through the day....but YESTERDAY)...I was sooooo exhausted, and on top of that since I'm tutoring on monday and meeting my PI, I had to finish an experiment, so I WAS A ZOMBIE THE WHOLE OF SUNDAY! coffee makes me nauseous so that didnt help at all!
I really want to know how you guys cope. tell me how you have other activities and still stay on top of your game...let the thread grow...
I'm using Ribopure kit(see link below). I'm extracting RNA for microarrays in yeast, and I'm really annoyed, because I finaly got 40micrograms, but even though the A(260/280) is 2.1, I keep getting A(260/230) around 0.22! I've got a huge peak on the 230, and I cant work out wat it is. I avoided the phenol, and I have a pretty clean space, I'm starting to think the last DNAse treatment step is ruining it for me!:-s
how on earth do i get rid of that peak. an ex lab member used to get clean and I cannot get a hold of them(PI is busy of course) and I have noone else to ask. thanks for your reply!
