I have just about gotten brave enough to apply for PhDs. I am mostly interested in projects, which are outlined by the PIs, with room for further work during the course.

Currently I am looking at various projects in my area of interest, reading up articles of those PIs, trying to write the essay and stuff.

When you apply for a PhD, should your written essay consist of a PhD proposal or should it simply reflect your interest to pursue research (the specific area) and so on.
