So I want to apply to a Phd in Communication. However, both my undergraduate and masters degrees are in Asian Studies. I do have some research experience and several conference papers, but they are all totally not related to the field of Communication. Recommendation letters that I am going to have will reflect my ability to conduct research, but the evidence of that will be related to asian studies only. On the other hand I have plenty of work experience in the industry (journalism and PR), which actually made me interested in this field. GPA is high, GRE score is very high, statement of purpose is good because I am really passionate about communications. But I think my background might be a big problem.
Given all that, do I have any chance of getting admitted with background like this and zero research experience in that particular area I apply to?
