Hello,
can someone please tell me if qualitative research is empirical? I am getting different meanings from the Internet and need to know the answer now.
Thanks
What are the differences between: qualitative/quantitative/empirical?
Is qualitative the opposite of quantitative, and still empirical, or is qualitative research not empirical?
Hello,
say you sent an abstract for a conference and received acknowledgement of receipt, how long do you wait until you are told the outcome of the application?
On the date stipulated in their submission guidelines, or after that date?
Thanks.
Is anyone willing to help me with doing my data analysis on mlwin? I am new to this software, but I am having trouble doing a multi-level logistic regression.
I would appreciate either face-to-face or skype and I am willing to pay.
I have already tried the online LEMMA course, went through the templates, but I am too thick to apply the knowledge to my own data ! :(
Thanks.
Hello all,
I am so stressed about my dissertation. I have less than 2 months to finish it, and I am only just starting the introduction. I wasted so much time and now I cannot write because I keep thinking of the deadline and keep telling myself I won't make it! :(
What do you do when this happens?
What prevents me from working is the fact that I hate anything I write. I think it all sounds meaningless and stupid and I think my markers will be so unimpressed.
I checked and I don't qualify either! :( Would be grateful if someone shared (if it's acceptable)
Thanks for your reply. I think I will just stick to what I know and use some online manuals, for a few things. I am just worried I might be marked down if I end up using a certain method, but the examiner sees that I could have used something else (which I may not know about!). Anyhow, I will place my trust in God, and focus a lot on the interpretation aspect. :)
Hello all,
I would like to get a tutor to help me with doing some quantitative analysis. We had an introductory module a few months ago, but I am not sure I want to use the package we did in class, and I want to use more advanced techniques as well. I have to submit my dissertation in September, but I really do not want to limit myself to the basics we did. So, I am thinking of getting a tutor to help me with sorting out how to demonstrate if my hypotheses are correct. I am unsure if I should do this as:
- I have never asked for help before and I feel uneasy doing it now.
- I have to sign a paper saying it is my own work. Yet, if I get a tutor, it won't be my own work as I will have been shown how to do things I may not have known before.
Should I? Should I not?
I am too proud to get one, yet it is difficult to teach myself when I only have 2 months to go. Plus, I don't lik submitting something of a mediocre quality, so I kind of need some help. Right now, I am thinking I should just do whatever I know and not care how sophisticated it is.
THANKS.
Hello all,
I seem to hear and read everywhere that the Phd is a rather lonely experience. As a prospective research student (hopefully!), I do not know if students interact well or not in my department. Since I am a Master student here already, I only see phd students when they're in for a meeting with a supervisor, or when they're using the study desks to write their thesis. I am quite worried about ending up being on my own. How bad is this isolation? Did you manage to cope with it? What would you suggest to deal with it? I am very friendly, but maybe research students just want to be left alone and not socialise?
Thank you WOWZERS! Actually my dissertation is only 11 000 words. I think I'll follow your advice. Thank you :)
feeling awful as I have not done anything for 2 weeks now! :( This is due in September as well!
Hello all,
I am confused about what expression to use to define the social phenomenon I am studying. Basically, it is given a particular name by quite a few scholars, whilst others do not use this expression to refer to it. They define it by using general terms. Essentially, the two groups are talking about the same thing, but the first one emphasises particularism, while the second one treats it as a local variation of a phenomenon present in all societies. I agree with the latter, but still chose to use the expression to narrow down the literature I have to tackle and make my research manageable. Is this correct? I only have 2 months left to be done with this and don't know if I should use the second position and start researching all over again! I would have to tackle more than 100 sources for it (for a Master's Dissertation!)
Thanks. Hope you understood me!
Hey all,
can you ever be certain that you have read all that there is to read on your chosen topic? What if you believe you did, but may have actually missed some works? My whole dissertation rests on a topic which I believe is under-researched and lacks empirical analysis. I think I may have covered what there is to cover in terms of the literature (in English only!) but imagine I later find out that some author used a different keyword to refer to the phenomenon I am studying and has actually carried out an empirical investigation? My thesis will be nullified!!! :( The problem is that because we understand phenomena differently, not everyone will use the word currently used in the literature to refer to it. Yet, this will be a problem for me.
Please advise friends.
Thanks
Hello all,
I cannot focus at all on my dissertation! I know what I want to write and how. Yet, it is so much effort to think of the proper words/phrases to use that in the end, I lose focus and then stress! :(
I am basically never satisfied with the way I express myself on paper. I wish my vocabulary was more sophisticated.
