Sport Economics phd- been told to look into USA but clueless!

Hi,
Currently graduated with a good first degree in BA Economics. I'm studying an MSc in development economics next year at Nottingham University (UK).
Afterwards want to look into sport/development with economics as a phd subject. Been told USA is where most research is done with sport economics but don't know where to get started.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
