I have a presentation to a company, they have supplier components (but no funding) as so therefore will be acknowledged at the end of the presentation appropriately.

My question is about the front slide of the PowerPoint presentation with the project title. Should everyone's name be placed onto the front slide, even if they only participated a small amount, what is some of there data is in the slides (unpublished, and of course used with there permission)? I have named them on that slide but should they be placed on the front cover slide too?

I would really appreciate advice on how everyone deals with this. Thanks.

Thanks all, yes the additional person I am refering to is not the supervisor, he/she is someone who is not involved in the process, just making notes on the process of the viva, but is not allowed to interfere.

I was under the assumption that my supervisor would not be there, I best find this out. Not sure if I would prefer my supervisor to be there or not though? Guess that has more pros than cons.

Hi all,

I am due to have my viva (very soon) and need to find out your thoughts on umpires/invigilator/fair play people as part of the viva process. I can't see any reason why I should have one there to ensure that the viva process is completed fairly and everyone is treated fairly and respectfully, does anyone have any experience with this? I can't see any disadvantge of this other person being part of the process, or am I missing something?

Just wanted to get some advice from others doing a Phd and submitted publications. I am very close to submission of my PhD, and whilst I am still within my post I would like to submit a journal paper, however, I wanted to know the best way to make the most of the research that I will hand in for my thesis. Is it acceptable to put some of the research and results from my thesis also in the journal paper? Would I need to change re-write things to avoid plagiarising my own work? I would really appreciate some advice and input from others.

I would like to know the latest in Plagiarism checking tools that I can use before submitting my PhD, I have come across Viper (http://www.scanmyessay.com), but it seems that they save you document on there database. Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with this or advice on alternatives, etc. Thanks.

Hi all I have two specific questions on the thesis and needed some advice please.

1) How to do you refer to the "thesis", I have been using "project" to refer to the research, i.e. "two different methods were used in this project". However, should we avoid using the word "thesis", i.e. "this will be explain within chapter 5 of the thesis".

2) I know that we should explain the limitations of our methodology in the "methodology" section, however some of the limitations of the methodology were only discovered during when the results were obtained, therefore I am not sure if the explaination of these particular limitations should be placed in the results section instead.

I am writing up my thesis, I am really confused about tenses, I seem to get difference of opinion on this and people mixing up tenses in a thesis. What tenses should be used and would they be different for the following sections.

Introduction
Literature Review
Methods
Results
Discussion
Conclusion
Further Work

Wow you supervisor actually read your thesis, thats a good achievement, I don't know if others have problems getting there supervisors to read stuff properly and critic things, and not just skim read. My supervisor does not things in drips and drabs, he wants it all finished and then handed in for initial review. I guess everyone works differently. So the "3 month Phd" videos I have seen around youtube and maybe a little to ambitious then.

I was going to ask how confident you felt handing your first draft in, but it sounded like you expected it to be pretty much there. As you say, when do you get to that "satisfied" point, enough to hand things in and move on. Sounds like you are quite a self motivated person with ambitions to move on so you were very proactive in getting things done and submitted.

Yes, it does sound like a very similar situation. Do you mind me asking what subject area you PhD was in?

I completely agree with (1) and (2), I think its the same for us (3). With regards to number (4) I am not sure what to do after my PhD, stay in academia or go back into industry, did you know what what wanted to do when you were at my stage?

Also, when did you have a completed draft to your supervisor for review?

Firstly congratulations on passing your Viva, and with no corrections! Well done!

I always thought it was standard practice in academia to publish work jointly authored with you supervisor? Even if the supervisor didn't actually do anything to contribute.

Hi all

I am trying to work out the best strategy to completion, my PhD is within Science and Engineering but I guess the same strategy is relevant to all subject areas. We are now in the middle of November 2012 and my registration at the university is due to end at in Jun 2013. So I want to work out the best strategy for completion. I am currently writing up my draft thesis (I would say its roughly 75-80% complete). Are there any suggestions or advice from others who are going through or been through the process for PhD completion. Should I aim to submit my draft and final thesis ASAP or should I hold back a little and make sure that more is completed before submitting. Any advice and suggestions would be much appreciated.
