Hi Mathgirl!
Welcome to the forum. You seem to be making good progress with your work, which is great.
Keep up with your work and hope you will get the support you desired from the forum :)
Hello Pablo!
Congrats for going through VIVA. It indeed is a very difficult process and you performed well.
I understand your concern but why do not you see it as the possible positive outcome. The examiners said you need to improve just 10 percent and still provided you 12 months. Have you checked your university guidelines for the Viva outcomes? In some Unis there are only two options for corrections 3 months or 12 months and the examiners might think you fall in between? or Are you working full time? Either way the bright side is you have got 12 months for the corrections of only 10 percent improvement and you have definite map to follow. You can use this time for working(may be part time), finding post doc position(in case you haven't secured one) and even for publication. Remaining motivated is the key for the success which is the prerequisite for the degree of PhD. There are many examples of RR in this forum who successfully finished it and now are in academia.
As per your details you still are waiting for the revisions in the written form. Have a break till then with your family or friends and then finish it off. You are nearly there just stay positive.
Good luck!
@Dunham: Yes exactly. They do not think even once before practicing their age old male chauvinist mentality. How can they give such comments in the written form??? It means they surely have enjoyed their power for long which is an utter shame on academia. Having such people with power is immensely dangerous. Academics have more opportunities for practicing their biased power on students since they are the easy catches and the academics know they can go clean chit even though they are the bully as the management ultimately favours them. These big fishes needed to be caught red handed and punished for their wrong doings.
Oh Congrats Dr Emma!!! I am so happy for you :) You managed well inspite of family with kinds. An another successful story added in the forum :)
Ha Ha! The mantra learned 'Do not care about the content or ambiguity of the paper, rather get a male co author and you are published*'
Hi Emma
I do not know if you will be able to see this but I would like to wish you luck anyway.
I hope you go through the process well and give your best performance. Do not worry about the outcome!
Best Luck :)
@ Grumphymule: Yes I am trying to figure out what works and what does not. It is a trial and error
@ AislingB: You are so true however as I mentioned I am doing certain substantial changes in my theses, which means I may have to read new docs to get more insight. This interferes with my daily goals. Though on one hand I understand spending time on reading, which leads to fewer goal achievement I do not seem to accept the fact that I am unable to achieve all goals. I know this is harsh but I am a self critic which affects my performance. On the bright side I have not disowned the possibility to contribute in future but I can not say for sure right now and hence I called for goodbye for the time being.
I hope the thread works best for you all :)
Welcome Claira
It is a great forum to be a part of and it will certainly benefit you since you are living away from your university. Do get advantage of this intellectual community and also do not forget to venture on the past threads for more getting insights on the particular topic.
Good luck
Got them! Thanks so.. much Tulip :)
Completed!
It is a well organised survey but I have just two suggestions,
1. There is no column for bullying experience once or twice. It just has options often or sometimes.
2. It would be great (may be helpful to you?) to include the form of bullying as there are end numbers of cyber bullying.
Thanks
Thats GREAT Tulip! I have PM you :)
A Big Thank You :))
Hello!
I need two articles as I do not have an access to uni database. If someone can get it for me, that would be the great HELP!
Unterhalter, E. (2003). Crossing disciplinary boundaries: the potential of Sen's capability approach for sociologists of education. British Journal of Sociology of Education, 24(5), 665-669.
Saito, M. (2003). Amartya Sen's capability approach to education: A critical exploration. Journal of philosophy of education, 37(1), 17-33.
Many thanks :)
Hello everyone!
I feel happy seeing everyone progressing steadily. However on the personal front I do not think that the accountability thread does good to me. It creates immense pressure on me if I can not achieve the desired goals which affect my subsequent day performance as well. I am moving ahead but slowly and by documenting my progress I just feel so inadequate. There are some major changes I am doing in my thesis. Nevertheless there are many aspects that need attention at the moment. Anyways no time to talk about it as I can write more in my thesis than crying. But I maintain that daily accountability is not for everyone, at least not for me.
Sorry but I wont be able to contribute any longer in this thread :(
But I would like to wish GOOD LUCK to you all and welcome to AislingB :)
Hey Emma!
I was thinking about your Viva as you mentioned in the earlier post. You are so lucky for being almost there. I can exchange this vicious cycle of thesis writing with a Viva exam any time. It seems like writing takes eternity and it appears incomplete no matter how much you add. I echo HazyJane's advice and if you cant get anybody(other than your fellow student) you can practice in front of the mirror. Wear comfortable clothes, drink enough water, take good sleep and meal, take two deep breath before Viva and you are ready to rock the it and of course do not forget to smile during Viva. Though I have not appeared for the Viva I can say that it seems like we do not know a thing before every exam but the truth is you do. Do not focus on the outcome just concentrate on providing 100 percent. All the very best :)
