Just wondered what other people's other commitments are and how they balance their PhD/studies around them... I'm currently teaching 6 hours a week (not at uni - local college Access and BTec Business Courses). It doesn't require a great deal of planning (very much portfolio based work) but some marking obviously. I'm also doing a part time PGCE in post-compulsary education... It's a requirement of my part time teaching hours and takes up an evening a week (and a weekend once a month to get reading done)... Is this too much? I'm in a fair bit of debt so not working unfortunately isn't an option...
I am single, don't have kids (so save time that way)... Don't drink - too much - and my leisure activities are usually centred around going to watch football every other weekend, working out and going to the cinema.
Hi all... Just wondered if anyone knows of any decent databases for jobs for PhD graduates that are non-academic based. Am based a Business School with little industry experience.
Though I'm only just starting off on my PhD (and thus far enjoying it) am conscious that I want to ensure that I market myself as strongly as possible to any prospective employers so could anyone recommend tasks to do in tandem with my PhD?
Finally, any facts (i.e. type of jobs/starting salaries) for PhD graduates would be appreciated.
Cheers...
Morning all - I'm in the MRes stage of my 1 + 3 ESRC quota funding and very confused... Does anyone have an idea of the distinction between the '1' stage of funding... Specifically for my MRes... I'm obviously trying to tie in any literature review and subsequent research with my PhD (which I officially start next year!) but I'm almost viewing it as a four year PhD (with a 25,000 word MRes paper to submit at the end of this year in tandem with it...). Just wondering how anyone generally balances the two...
Cheers.
Hi all,
Thanks very much for your feedback. To answer your question Sue yes I have met with my supervisor who has been great. She was also in touch last night (I did contact her to raise a couple of issues related to my worries) and we've agreed to a meeting next week which has put my mind very much at ease.
If I'm honest I obviously need to almost return to my detailed proposal set out previously (that I submitted in order to secure the funding). Yes I did have a detailed time line and if I'm honest just looking back over that stuff maybe I was potentially panicking too much.
Thanks very much both of you for your time. I look forward very much to contributing on this forum over the coming months ahead.
Regards,
Dave :-)
Hi all,
I just firstly wanted to introduce myself. My name's Dave and I started my PhD programme at the University of Nottingham Business School (NUBS) last week. A wee bit of a background... My PhD's in 'co-creation within HE' and am based within the marketing department of the Business School. I was reading the thread earlier for new starters on a PhD... It would be great if there's fellow people within the East Midlands region who are in a similar position.
Anyway, I just wanted to ask if anyone's had a similar problem to me or if I'm just 'wierd'. I've done plenty of studying in the past (last degree was a taught MSc in Marketing) but not really sure at the moment how to almost start my actual work. I'm on a 1 + 3 ESRC quota award meaning I'm doing an MRes in Business and Management in my first year and, whilst I've got my taught modules that I need to complete, I just don't know where to start in the initial stage! It's as if I've got this 100,000 word project to do over four years but what are people's tips for initially starting? Am I as well to just read around the subject area? Make notes? Or just literally start writing my thesis immediately? Apologies if this doesn't make sense, I'm just a wee bit concerned that I'm floating along.
Thanks in advance and best wishes to you all.
Regards,
Dave
Hi thanks for that.... Just seems everywhere I look a lot of websites advise that 'publishing must start straight away'....
Hi all.... a new poster on this website (hoping to be a more regular poster from now on mind you...). Am looking to start a PhD next year at Leeds uni (funding permitting).... A massive, massive dream of mine is to do a years round the world trip (well closer to ten months) prior to settling into a career. Is this possible straight away after a PhD or would this have a major detrimental effect upon long term career prospects? Any advice appreciated....
