married, father, mortgage.
did my PhD eventually, graduated last year (started in 2013!)
on my second postdoc and loving it.
what a long road it has been :-)

So this is one option that's been presented to me... my boss has no funding right now and his PA suggested I come up with my own proposal and if worthy he would apply on my behalf.

does that make sense? I am completely unfamiliar with the proposal side of things.

has anyone done this for their own PhD? I'm extremely interested to hear about it

Pass with Merit, although I was kind of hoping to achieve a 65% average but was just below that.

75% for my dissertation, which makes up 60% of my research project.

The other 40% is "Coursework" (supervisor's marks and presentation). I got 58% for this and am so annoyed! I did the project at work and now suspicious of one of my colleagues, although my presentation was a bit poor, so maybe that' what let me down...

looking to the future... do you think with Merit and 75% in dissertation I have a good chance of getting a PhD studentship?

I am doing the course one day per week over 2 years. Total fees £5.9K, bursary 5K. I am very grateful to be saving almost 11K, trust me, but I am wondering if I am in a position to secure extra funding...

my present funding is from CRUK, but I know that there are other sources supporting this particular course.

my background is chemical sciences and intended on moving into nanotech (biomedical apps of magnetic nanoparticles in cancer research), but this course has caught my eye ;-)

just out of interest, how are people funding themselves through a masters? I hope to save between now and september, but will have to work part-time aswell. I've plenty of industrial experience so ideally could pt work in a lab. even better, a pt job in king's!!

I've recently been accepted for MRes at King's College London, it is not funded.

however, there is a course at Queen Mary where it is possible to get fees covered. the chances are I'll continue onto phd, so in this case is prestige so important?
