I could self fund, but that would involve moving university. (If i moved home then i wouldn't have to worry about rent etc...) I really don't know how people manage to do it (self funding)!

Hey chris! I can't believe you have your letter already! (I've been pouncing on the post woman for a week now... i think she's a little afraid of me now) Anyway, i'm sorry about the decision. Don't let it get you down though. I've had two rejections and am still here, so it is possible to get by without them! Also, you never know what your department is going to come up with. Last year when i got my "thanks but no thanks" letter i wrote off a PhD and started planning a year out. However, out of nowhere my dept found the funding for me to carry on. (Don't ask me how, i hadn't applied for it!) So, you never know there's still hope!

Thanks w2dn, my attempts to reconcile proved sucessful, and we're now back on speaking terms. That said, it still has a shifty look in its eyes...

Hello Fi! I just thought that i'd post a reply to let you know that you're not alone in feeling like this. I started my PhD six months ago and i'm feeling more or less the same way you are. Part of the problem with me is that i've moved to a new city, so i miss my old friends. (And i've got into the irritating habit of idealising my old university, which is stupid!)However, things are improving. Sorting out your social life is really important. (For one thing you'll have someone nearby to moan at.) I don't know if this applies to you, but i feel that i should give my Phd a year before i make any big decisions. However, if you're really unhappy this may be a little too long to wait. Anyway, hope things improve!

I would just like to thank you guys for cheering me up. Have been having a bad day. (I swore at my PhD about an hour ago, and now it's walked off in a huff.) But reading this thread has really cheered me up. In fact, i'm feeling so chirpy that i might even try to reconcile with it...
