Has anyone applied for the phd studentships at city for 2012?

i have been looking at that one as well as www.jobs.ac.uk, still the number is quite less, also i know from some colleagues that got funded PhDs that werent advertised and they got to know from their friends already working at the unis

I am looking for a funded project in automotive engineering for my PhD. However going through various university websites I have noticed that the PhDs that are advertised are few and far in between. Is it because most are not advertised and recruited internally? If so, what is the best way of getting one, since i finished my masters 5 years back and have been working in the industry then.

One of my friends (a EU national) is doing a part time PhD in Social Sciences from a UK institution. She started in 2007 as a full time student but converted in into part time after 2 years. It can be re converted into full time. It was self funded up till now, however are there any ways of getting any funding for it to support tution fees and living expenses? Any ideas?

I have been looking around if there is any website or source which would advertise PhD studentships in continental Eueope. There are some for UK, but if one wants to find the ones in other countries in Europe. Please advise.
