How would you describe a good supervisor?
K

bitterbutter,

how to delivered all the experiments beyond supervisor's expectations? can you or your friends share the tips? Love to know that!

can you get a Phd again if you had a Phd in another country?
K

Huh, do you want to do PhD twice?

Anybody else pregnant??!!
K

Viva can be postponed after your labour.

But for me, it is better to finish all before the baby arrive! cause when you have a baby, you do not want to think about others! :).

I think the best is to discuss with school/registry/supervisor or anyone who is responsible to your viva. Let them know your due date, and try to convince them to arrange your viva a 2 or 3 weeks earlier than labour date.

That's what I did when I get pregnant during master studies:)

Working Hours?!? What to expect
K

I think 9-5 everyday is minimum working hour. If you are lab- based, sometimes you need to come during the weekend. If non-lab, the time is more flexible.

as for me, i come in to office/lab at 930 am, and have lunch break about 1 hour and go home at 530 pm.

if there is no lab, I will work on reading as I do not have spare time at home, busy with husband and 2 kids! :)

I'm going to be a PhD student!

Hi everyone,

welcome to PhDLand. Anyone here in Aberdeen ?

Finishing with a Masters rather than continuing to PhD
K

uh, one of my collegue is going to quit PhD and just finish with Mphil though. He got a good job, and I think he is doing the best for this year even though he didn't like the project.

in aberdeen university, after 9 months we have to submit a kind of mini-dissertation..have a oral presentation and viva. then the graduate school committee will decide either we can persue to second year of PhD or, terminated and get MPhil. usually everybody will pass, of course with a lots of hard work!

What are PhD fees for?
K

Hi,

I think the tution fees is for university operation and running.

And for those who is doing lab-based, we have to pay bench fee. does anyone know what iis it for?

Anybody else pregnant??!!

Hi,

I started my Phd in Dec 2006 and have a baby on 15 march 2007. I took maternity leave from March to June, and just starting back my lab works now.

It is not as easy job being a Phd student with a young family. I also had a toddler, and the situation at home is really makes me dizzy. Plus also the lab works for Phd..I still cannot manage my self and always feel dissapointed with myself.

You are lucky cause just get pregnant at the end of PhD.Just do the best with the writing and enjoy your baby! :)

How would you describe a good supervisor?
K

I do not know how to describe a really good supervisor since he/she is a human, so not a perfect one.

as for me, my MSc supervisor project is really nice, but he is so busy. he is a consultant, also head of department. and he assigned a lab technician to help me. I thanks a lots to the technician for helping me a lots when I was in my lab. Yes, my supervisor is nice, but he is not there when I need him.

I am doing my Phd, just started 4 months ago. My current supervisor is a women, really caring and always want to see me everyday. She wanted me to be in the lab all the time..if not working, just have a chit-chat..while me is thinking in other way..I love to sit on my work station to read and read if there is nothing to do in the lab.She is very strict about the time, and makes me feel dizzy at the moment. Yes, she makes me tension but if I analyze back, she is a good supervisor indeed because she make sure I am on the track and do my job all the time! :)

After 4 months started my PhD study...
K

Hi everybody,

I also just started my PhD 4 months ago, after recover from maternity leave. My lab-mates also behave like yours. At first, I was also feel hurt and think that they are not helpful. But, when I analyze the situation, I realize that eveybody is busy and the lab mates really did not know the answer for my questions.

PhD required hard work, and also a team work. Just be humble...
